What Monoculo does with your files
Monoculo renders Markdown, JSON, Mermaid, YAML and source files on your device: in the browser extension, the web app at monoculo.app, and the Android and iOS apps. Files you open, paste, drop or share to the app are read and displayed locally. They are never uploaded to us or to anyone else.
The same goes for a folder you open in the web app, though your browser may ask to let the site view its files or label its button Upload: the files are read in your browser and never leave your device. This is how Monoculo is built, not a setting: there is no server that receives your files, and there never will be.
Files opened by link
When you open a file by its web address, your device downloads it directly from the server that hosts it, as a browser would. That server sees an ordinary request from your device; we are not involved.
Connecting GitHub
If you connect GitHub in the phone app, your phone connects directly to GitHub to sign in and read the repositories you allow. GitHub receives those requests; Monoculo does not.
Your connection and the list of repositories you add are kept in your phone's secure storage. Private file contents and search indexes are kept in memory, without an offline copy. Folder paths can appear in the phone's navigation history; opening them requires a valid GitHub connection.
Disconnect GitHub removes the local connection and connected folders. You can also revoke Monoculo's authorization in your GitHub settings. iOS can keep secure credentials after an app is uninstalled: disconnect first if you want to remove them from the phone.
What Monoculo keeps on your device
To work at all, Monoculo keeps a little of its own data where it runs: in the browser's storage for the extension, the web app and the page inside the phone apps, and in the phone's own storage for the apps. There are no cookies, and none of it is ever sent anywhere — there is nowhere for it to go. This is what it keeps.
Your settings. The theme, the page width, the sidebar, Custom CSS and the Backlinks limits. Every one of them stays on the device you set it on, in the extension as in the web app and the phone apps. Until October 2026 the extensions left a few of them to the browser's own extension sync, which copies them between your computers under your browser account; they don't any more, and the first run of a newer version takes back whatever sync still held.
What you had open, in the web app and the phone apps. The last ten files you opened, with their name, where they were, when you opened them, and a few words of their text for the card on the start page. And the file and the place in it you left, so the next launch opens where you were; text you pasted, or a file your browser cannot hand us again, is kept as text for that, when it is short enough.
The folders you opened, in the web app and the phone apps. Their names, how you sorted them, and the permission your device gave Monoculo to read them again: a bookmark on iPhone, a folder grant on Android, a handle in the browser. Where a browser offers no such handle, the folder is kept as a copy of its files in that browser's storage on your device.
The folder index, which is what makes Backlinks, wiki links, tags, the graph and search work: for every note in a folder you opened, its links, headings, tags and its words. It is an index of your own notes, kept beside them on your device, for the ten folders you used last. Private GitHub repositories are the exception: their contents and their index are kept in memory only and never written down.
The installed web app also keeps a copy of Monoculo's own files, so it opens without a connection. Uninstalling the app or the extension removes everything above; in a browser, so does clearing the site's data.
No tracking
Monoculo has no accounts of its own, no cookies, and no tracking of any kind. It contains no analytics or advertising SDKs, and no third-party code that collects data. What this page promises, above all, is the files: they are never uploaded.
The website
The web app is hosted on Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and pages requested) for security and operations, under Vercel's privacy policy. We don't combine or use these logs to identify anyone.
Children
Monoculo collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
