Support

Help with Monoculo on the web, Android and iOS.

Opening a file

Android: open a file from your file manager, email or chat app and choose Monoculo, or share it to Monoculo. You can also tap Open file in the app.

iPhone: in Files, Mail or another app, tap Share → Monoculo, or tap Open file in the app.

Web: drop a file on the page, paste text, or paste a link to a file on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or any site that allows it.

Supported files

Markdown (with math, Mermaid diagrams, footnotes and front matter), JSON, YAML, Mermaid (.mmd, .mermaid) and common source code files.

Folders, Linked from and the index

Open a whole folder with Open folder. Monoculo reads its Markdown documents once, the folder you're looking at first, so Linked from (the documents that link to the one you're reading) and [[wiki links]] can answer at once. While it reads, a small Indexing documents pill shows how far it got. After that, only documents that changed are read again.

The index stays on your device, inside the app (in the browser's own storage on the web). Nothing is written to your folder and nothing is uploaded. Deleting the app, or the site's data, deletes it; it is built again the next time you open the folder. The ten folders you opened last are kept.

Up to 10,000 documents, 16 folders deep, are indexed; .git, .obsidian, .trash, node_modules and build folders are skipped. In the browser extension, both limits and the skipped folders can be changed in Options.

Links to, beside Linked from, is the other way round: everywhere the document you're reading links to, with broken links at the top and greyed out in the document. A link is broken when no file has its name, the heading it names isn't in the file, or it points outside the folder you opened, which Monoculo can't read there. A heading in a document not read yet isn't checked.

Linked from looks incomplete? Only documents inside the opened folder count: open the folder above to include more. Files over 2 MB, files that couldn't be read (an iCloud file without a connection) and links inside non-Markdown files aren't counted. Documents that changed are read again by themselves; on iPhone, documents left in iCloud are listed above the list, with Download.

A link won't open

Some sites don't allow other apps to read their files. Try the file's raw link (for GitHub, the Raw button), or download the file and open it from your device.
